I filled up for the first time on Saturday. It went down a little on Tuesday, but when I came home from work last night it was back to saying it was full. I know the car is still working out my average MPG, but I didn't think this had any relation to the fuel gauge. Is the car more intelligent than I thought, or is the fuel gauge temperamental?

Could be that the fuel gauge is temperamental at the moment. Usually these things work using a float in the fuel tank (a bit like the ballcock in a toilet cistern), so if it sticks then you get a false reading. Also the reading may update only once in a while instead of continuously, so you could get an untrue reading which corrects itself in time
